Meredith and Co.
Meredith and Co. is a classic children’s school story by George Mills, first published in 1933 by Oxford University Press in the United Kingdom. The tale follows Meredith (Muggs), a Sixth Form prefect at Leadham House Preparatory School, and his friends Hawk, Pongo, Clayton, Pigface, Renton, and Murray, along with their bulldog Uggles, as they have adventures at school. The original illustrations were by C. E. Brock. A 1950 edition by the same publisher added new drawings by D. White. A later edition from Andrew Dakers in London, printed in Czechoslovakia, appeared around 1957 with updated illustrations signed by an artist using the name “Vernon,” reflecting post-war times. Meredith and Co. was followed by a sequel, King Willow, in 1938. The book is praised for capturing the language and life of interwar school pupils.
