*SCAPE building
SCAPE building is a community youth space at 2 Orchard Link, Singapore. Opened in 2010, the five-storey complex covers about 13,103 square metres (3.2 acres) and was designed by RSP Architects. Its hexagonal exterior and open, interconnected spaces are meant to feel inviting and youth-focused. The project grew from a 2005 consultation that gathered more than 2,000 ideas from young people; these ideas were distilled into six concepts—Street+Market, Warehouse, Playground, Grid, Cache, and Studio—and the final design was chosen in a 2006 competition. The name, marked by an asterisk, symbolizes a wildcard for multiple uses: soundscape (music), mindscape (learning), and playscape (recreation). The aim is to provide a physical platform for youths to develop and showcase their talents and creativity.
SCAPE sits near Somerset MRT and the Youth Park, as part of the MCCY’s Somerset Belt plan to create a space shaped by youth for youth. The ground floor opens to a large Playspace for outdoor events (up to about 4,000 people) and a curved, reflective ceiling greets visitors at the drop-off. The Underground on the first floor hosts around 30 flea market stalls and can also serve as an acoustic venue. The Ground Theatre on the second floor covers about 9,600 square feet with seating for more than 450. Retail and dining spaces occupy the upper floors, while the Studio on the third and fourth floors offers music and dance facilities. Top floors feature sky terraces for socialising, with HubQuarters and the management offices on the upper levels.
Since it began, SCAPE has undergone several revamps to boost youth engagement. In 2012, HubQuarters was created as a base for youth organisations offering development programmes. The 2014 renovation added performance areas and a media hub. A major redevelopment was announced in 2022 under the Somerset Belt Masterplan to refresh infrastructure, tenant mix, and accessibility. The Ground Theatre and HubQuarters reopened in 2024, with further upgrades planned through 2025. SCAPE officially reopened on 9 November 2025.
SCAPE was established in 2004 as a non-profit to give youths a space to explore social and creative interests. The site was reserved in 2005 beside Orchard Cineleisure and Mandarin Hotel, later expanded to 2 hectares to allow more youth activities. The building was designed to be flexible and integrated with its surroundings, prioritising public accessibility and a design that invites ongoing collaboration between young people, communities, and partners.
