Matt Carragher (14 January 1976 – December 2016) was an English footballer who played as a defender. He started his career with Wigan Athletic in 1993, making 119 league appearances and helping the club win the Third Division title in 1996–97. He then joined Port Vale in 1997, became captain, and led the team to Football League Trophy glory in 2001. Carragher played 194 league games for Vale before being released in 2003. After a short spell with Stafford Rangers, he spent two years with Macclesfield Town, making 49 league appearances and scoring five goals, before retiring in 2005.

A versatile defender, Carragher could play left-back, right-back or as a sweeper and was described as a natural leader. He came through Wigan’s youth system and was known for his strong character. He married Louise Morgan in 2001, had three older sisters, and his father was a semi-professional footballer.

Carragher died of cancer in December 2016 at the age of 40. Former teammate Tony Naylor paid tribute to him as a cheeky, confident, and down-to-earth Scouse lad.
