Sydney Fish Market
Sydney Fish Market is a large seafood market in Sydney, Australia. In 2026, it moved from Blackwattle Bay in Pyrmont to Glebe, making it one of the world’s biggest fish markets. The complex includes a working port, wholesale and retail seafood markets, a deli, sushi bar, bakery, gift shop, fruit and vegetable stalls, a meat deli, a drinks outlet, a seafood cooking school, indoor seating and an outdoor promenade for visitors.
Every day, seafood is auctioned for retailers, and since 1995 the market has hosted a 36-hour Seafood Marathon over Christmas Eve.
The market’s history goes back to 1871 in Woolloomooloo, with later moves to Redfern and Haymarket before settling at Blackwattle Bay in 1966. It was privatized in 1994, and deregulation in the late 1990s reduced its monopoly.
In 2016, the NSW Government announced a new 35,000-square-metre complex nearby, with plans approved in 2020. Construction included a crane accident in 2023. The new Sydney Fish Market opened on 19 January 2026. A mural by Keith Howland, created in 1990, decorates the market.
Public transport serves the area near Wentworth Park, and the nearby light rail stop was renamed Bank Street in January 2026 after the opening.
