Matt Andriese
Matt Andriese is an American professional baseball pitcher who is currently a free agent. He was born on August 28, 1989, in Redlands, California, and bats and throws right-handed. Andriese has played in Major League Baseball for the Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins, and he spent time in Nippon Professional Baseball with the Yomiuri Giants.
Career overview
- Draft and early years: Andriese was a 37th-round pick of the Texas Rangers in 2008 but didn’t sign. He played college baseball at UC Riverside. The San Diego Padres selected him in the third round of the 2011 draft, and he spent time in the minor leagues before being traded to the Rays in 2014.
- MLB debut with the Rays: He made his major league debut with Tampa Bay on April 10, 2015. In 2015 he appeared in 25 games (eight starts) with a 4.11 ERA. A highlight came on May 14, 2016, when he threw a complete-game shutout against Oakland. That 2016 season ended with an 8-8 record and a 4.37 ERA with 109 strikeouts in 127 2/3 innings.
- 2017–2018: He began 2017 strong but suffered a hip stress reaction that kept him out for part of the season; he finished 2017 at 5-5 with a 4.50 ERA in 18 appearances (17 starts). In 2018 he started with the Rays and was traded to the Diamondbacks on July 25, 2018. With Arizona that year he went 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA in 14 games; in 2019 he was mostly a reliever for the Diamondbacks, posting a 4.71 ERA in 54 appearances.
- 2020–2021: Andriese was traded to the Angels in January 2020 and split that season between relief and a spot start, finishing 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA and two saves in 16 games. He was non-tendered by the Angels in December 2020, then signed with the Red Sox later that month. In 2021 with Boston, he posted a 6.03 ERA in 26 appearances before being designated for assignment in August and released.
- Mariners and Japan: He signed with the Seattle Mariners in August 2021, making eight appearances with a 2.45 ERA. After electing free agency, Andriese signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball in December 2021 and played there in 2022, going 0-2 with a 4.82 ERA.
- 2023–2024: In 2023 he spent time in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor league system with the Oklahoma City Blue, going 8-6 with a 6.05 ERA in 93 2/3 innings over 21 appearances (19 starts). In November 2023, he signed a minor league deal with the Miami Marlins. His 2024 season began with his contract being selected, and he appeared in a few games before being designated for assignment and moving between Jacksonville and Miami. He elected free agency again on October 2, 2024.
