Global Faith Leaders COP28 Summit
Ahead of COP28, a Global Faith Leaders Summit was held in Abu Dhabi on 6–7 November 2023. Organized by the Muslim Council of Elders with the COP28 Presidency, the United Nations Environment Programme and the Catholic Church, and under the patronage of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the meeting brought together 28 faith leaders and climate experts to address climate change.
Leaders from Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Sikh, Hindu and other traditions joined the effort and signed the Confluence of Conscience: Uniting for Planetary Resurgence, committing to step up climate action and raise ambitions ahead of COP28 in Dubai (30 November–12 December 2023). The participants walked along an equator route and planted a ghaf tree, the UAE’s national tree, before signing the Abu Dhabi Interfaith Statement and addressing the audience. Attendees included Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, and Dr Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President-designate and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology.
During COP28 in December, the Muslim Council of Elders will host a Faith Pavilion in cooperation with COP28, UNEP and a coalition of more than 70 organizations. The pavilion will give religious leaders a place to launch actions and share ideas to help nations fight climate change.
