Matina District
Matina is a district of the Matina canton in Limón Province, Costa Rica. It lies at coordinates 9°59′06″N 83°17′22″W. Matina covers 351.75 square kilometers and sits about 11 meters above sea level. The population was 9,142 at the 2011 census, giving a density of roughly 26 people per square kilometer. The district was created on June 24, 1969 (Ley 4344).
History: In 1747, the main fort of Matina, Fuerte de San Fernando de Matina, was captured by British Baymen and Miskito Sambus from the Mosquito Coast, and cacao-rich areas nearby were ravaged.
