Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku
Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku is a Japanese pop‑rock song by Field of View, released March 11, 1996 as the fourth single from their album Field of View II. It was written by Izumi Sakai and Tetsurō Oda and produced by BMF Field of View and Izumi Sakai. The song served as the opening theme for Dragon Ball GT and the main theme for the Dragon Ball Z film Dragon Ball: The Path to Power. The single reached number four on the Oricon Singles Chart and sold over 400,000 copies, earning Platinum status.
Sakai later released a cover of the song with her group Zard on their 1996 album Today Is Another Day.
U‑ya Asaoka, Field of View’s lead singer, first heard the track as a guitar demo and felt it was incredible. The band discussed it with Oda and arranger Takeshi Hayama. Although Asaoka had considered writing the lyrics himself, he received a fax with Sakai’s lyrics and found them incredibly catchy and a perfect fit for Dragon Ball. He noted that Sakai’s words and Oda’s music had been written with different phrasing in mind, which gave the song its unique appeal when combined.
This was Field of View’s first release after keyboardist Jun Abe left and it was recorded before bassist Kenji Niitsu joined. The music video was filmed at Kogakuin University. The B‑side is “Dear Old Days,” arranged by Akihito Tokunaga, who also contributed to the Dragon Ball GT music.
The single stayed on the charts for 11 weeks. Asaoka continues to perform the song live and aims to sing it as it was originally recorded. The track has been used as entrance music by athletes and has inspired many cover versions in different languages. In 2024, after Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama’s death, the Taiwanese city of Hualien began playing a piano arrangement of the song at city hall as a daily signal, at the mayor’s suggestion.
