Mathias Mpuuga
Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba is a Ugandan politician, lawyer, and former teacher. He served as Leader of the Opposition in Uganda’s Parliament from May 24, 2021, to January 9, 2024. He has been a Member of Parliament since May 2011, first for Masaka District and, after Masaka Municipality became a city, for Nyendo-Mukungwe Division.
He was the Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) from 2021 to 2024. He is currently described as a commissioner in the Parliament of Uganda.
Born in Lwengo District in Central Uganda, Mpuuga attended Kyamaganda Boys Demonstration School, Masaka Secondary School, and Nakyenyi Senior Secondary School. He studied at Makerere University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education, a Master of Arts in Economics, and a Bachelor of Laws in 2016. He later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre in 2020.
Before entering politics, Mpuuga worked as a teacher at Uganda Martyrs High School (1998–2003), was director of Masaka Town College (2000–2002), and held roles in private firms. He served as Youth Chairperson for Masaka District Local Government (2000–2011) and has been a member of the University Council of Mutesa I Royal University since 2010. He helped found Uganda Young Democrats, the youth wing of Uganda’s Democratic Party, and served in the Buganda Kingdom Lukiiko (Parliament) from 1998 to 2010.
In Parliament, Mpuuga has served on the Public Accounts Committee and the Appointments Committee. He held shadow minister roles for the Presidency and Anti-Corruption (2011–2016) and for Education (2016–2021). He was re-elected in 2021 as the MP for Nyendo-Mukungwe Division.
