Matam region
Matam is a region in northern Senegal. Its capital is the town of Matam. The region covers 29,445 square kilometers and has about 833,657 people as of the 2023 census, with a population density of 28.3 people per square kilometer. It is flat and arid, bordered to the north by the Senegal River and to the south by the Sahel plain, and is home to Pulaar-speaking Toucouleur people. Matam has three departments: Kanel, Matam, and Ranérou Ferlo. The time zone is GMT (UTC+0). A 2015 economic report notes that about half of Senegal’s agricultural value comes from Matam.
