Mastaura (Lycia)

Mastaura (Ancient Greek: Μάσταυρα) was a town in ancient Lycia, likely near the modern village of Dereağzı in Turkey, about 25 km northwest of Myra. A large brick-domed church at Dereağzı may have been Mastaura’s cathedral. In ancient church records, the bishopric of Mastaura in Lycia is listed as a first-rank suffragan of the metropolitan see of Myra during the 7th and 10th centuries. No named bishop of the see is known, though a bishop named Baanes attended the Photian Council of Constantinople in 879 and may have been the bishop of Mastaura Lycia. Today, Mastaura in Lycia is no longer a residential bishopric and is a titular see of the Catholic Church. Coordinates: 36.3348°N, 29.8151°E (Kaş District, Turkey).
