Martyrs of Ebsdorf
The Martyrs of Ebsdorf were Saxon Christians who died in the winter of 880 AD at the Battle of Lüneburg Heath near Ebstorf in Lower Saxony. After their deaths, the church declared them martyrs, and their feast day is February 2. The Saxon force included four bishops, eleven noblemen, and many unknown foot soldiers. Recognised saints include Bruno of Saxony, Marquard of Hildesheim, and Theodorich of Minden. Some lists also name 32 saints in total, including bishops, knights, and noblemen. They were killed while fighting Norse invaders from the Great Heathen Army, who had just been driven from England at the Battle of Edington.
