He was drafted 46th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 1980. In his rookie season (1981–82) he had 26 goals and 67 points. His best NHL season was 1989–90, when he scored 73 points for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 1983 he was traded to the New York Rangers, where he helped the team reach the Conference Finals in 1986. He formed a notable line with Anders Hedberg and Mark Pavelich. At the 1987 trade deadline he moved to the Maple Leafs, where he played for five and a half seasons on the “GEM” line with Gary Leeman and Ed Olczyk. In November 1990 he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets in a large deal that included Olczyk, and he returned to the Leafs in 1993 in a trade for Lucien Deblois. In his second stint with Toronto he played on a strong checking line with Bill Berg and Peter Zezel, helping the Leafs reach the Conference Finals in 1993 and 1994. After the 1994–95 lockout season, he signed with the Rangers for what would be his final NHL season. He then played three more years with the Cleveland Lumberjacks (IHL) as a player-coach, retiring in 1997.

After retiring, Osborne coached the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors (OHL) from late 1999 to mid-2000, after serving as an assistant coach the previous season. He was the assistant GM of the Mississauga IceDogs for the 2002–03 season. Osborne later worked as a hockey analyst for The Score and Leafs TV, and he's currently a pro scout for the Los Angeles Kings. He is a devout Christian and has worked at Christian hockey camps. His nickname is Ozzie.

Osborne is married to actress Madolyn Smith since 1988, and they have two daughters. His father, Alex Osborne, was a leader at a major Toronto area branch of CIBC.
