Archaeoprepona
Archaeoprepona is a genus of neotropical butterflies in the Nymphalidae family. They live from Mexico through Central America to northern South America and the Caribbean. They belong to the Charaxinae subfamily and the Preponini tribe. The wings on the upper side are dark with a bright blue band, while the underside is pale brown.
The genus Archaeoprepona was named by Hans Fruhstorfer in the early 20th century. The best-known species is Archaeoprepona demophon, the one-spotted prepona, which was first described by Carl Linnaeus as Papilio demophon in 1758. Many species in this group were originally described under other genera and later moved to Archaeoprepona.
The genus includes several related Neotropical species.
