Chaikyne, Chernihiv Oblast

Chaikyne is a small village in northern Ukraine, located in Chernihiv Oblast. It is part of the Novhorod-Siverskyi urban hromada and sits in Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion. The village lies on the Desna river basin, in the Dnieper Lowland, within Polissia. It covers about 0.52 square kilometers and sits at about 180 meters above sea level. The population was 296 people according to the 2001 census. The postal code is 16014 and the area code is +380 4658.

History

Chaikyne was founded in 1750. On June 12, 2020, it became part of the Novhorod-Siverskyi urban hromada as part of Ukraine’s local government reform. On July 17, 2020, Chaikyne remained in Novhorod-Siverskyi Raion, which became larger in area.

Geography and climate

Chaikyne is in the north of Ukraine, on the Desna River’s left bank. The climate is moderately continental: summers are warm (around 19°C in July) and winters are cold (around -7.5°C in January). Annual rainfall is about 650–700 mm. The area is covered by mixed forests, mainly pines and oaks, with podzol soils.

Attractions
