Mardi Gras (album)
Mardi Gras (album)
Overview
- Mardi Gras is the seventh and final studio album by Creedence Clearwater Revival, released April 11, 1972, on Fantasy Records.
- It was recorded after guitarist Tom Fogerty left the band, making CCR a trio.
- For the first time, all three remaining members wrote and sang songs and shared production duties, rather than having John Fogerty write most of the material.
- Recording was tense, and the group broke up soon after a short US tour to support the album.
Production
- Most of Mardi Gras was recorded in January 1972; two tracks, Sweet Hitch-Hiker and Door to Door, were recorded in spring 1971.
- Tom Fogerty had left the group in 1971 after a dispute over creative control.
- John Fogerty contributed only three original songs and sang lead on a cover, Hello Mary Lou. Doug Clifford and Stu Cook also contributed songs and lead vocals.
- By some accounts, Fogerty wanted equal contributions from all members, but tensions and personality clashes grew during the sessions.
Release and reception
- The album reached number 12 on the US charts and was certified Gold.
- It spawned two Top 40 singles: Sweet Hitch-Hiker and Someday Never Comes, both written and sung by Fogerty.
- Critical reception was mixed to poor. Rolling Stone’s Jon Landau called it the worst album by a major rock band up to that point. A rare positive note came from Gene Sculatti (Phonograph Record), who praised Fogerty’s performance but noted the absence of Tom Fogerty.
- Mardi Gras was not remastered for CD until 2000; a remastered version was included in the 40th‑anniversary CCR box set (not as a standalone). A 180‑gram vinyl remaster appeared in 2006, and a Japan‑exclusive reissue followed in 2011.
