The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team in San Francisco, playing in the National League. They began in 1883 in New York as the Gothams, later becoming the Giants, and mostly played at the Polo Grounds. They moved to San Francisco in 1958, briefly played at Seals Stadium, shared Candlestick Park for many years, and have called Oracle Park home since 2000. The team even set a National League record with 530 straight sellouts from 2010 to 2017.

The Giants are one of the most successful franchises in baseball. They have more wins than any other team and a very high winning percentage. In New York, they had 55 winning seasons between 1903 and 1939, including two long streaks of 10 or more straight winning seasons. In San Francisco, they have 39 winning seasons, the first 14 of which came in the city.

They have won eight World Series titles, tied for fourth-most in baseball, and they have 23 pennants, second-most in the National League. Their first title came in 1905, defeating the Philadelphia Athletics 4–1. They won four straight NL pennants from 1921 to 1924, and beat the cross-town Yankees in the World Series on two of those occasions. Their fourth title came in 1933 against the Washington Senators. In 1951 they won the NL pennant in a famous playoff featuring Bobby Thomson’s walk-off home run, known as the Shot Heard ’Round the World, but lost the World Series to the Yankees. The 1954 World Series victory came by sweeping the Cleveland Indians.

After moving to San Francisco, the Giants finally won another World Series in 2010, defeating the Texas Rangers 4–1. They won again in 2012 (sweeping the Detroit Tigers) and in 2014 (defeating the Kansas City Royals in seven games). The 2010 title ended a long drought and marked a high point after the move.

The Giants reached the World Series six times after relocating to California but lost in the first three attempts. The 1989 World Series against the Oakland Athletics was interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake and eventually the Giants were swept.

Throughout their 143-year history, the Giants have never had more than four straight losing seasons, and they did not finish a season exactly at .500 until 2022.
