Making Mirrors
Making Mirrors is the third studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Gotye, released on 19 August 2011 in Australia. It was recorded between 2008 and 2011 at several places, mainly in a converted studio at Gotye’s parents’ farm on the Mornington Peninsula. The album blends indie pop and art rock, and all tracks were written by Wally De Backer.
The lead single, Eyes Wide Open, came out in 2010 and featured a unique bass line created by sampling a metal fence from the Winton Musical Fence. The big hit, Somebody That I Used to Know, was released in July 2011 and topped charts around the world. Other singles include Bronte, I Feel Better, Easy Way Out, and Save Me. The album was promoted with a Sydney Opera House launch and a release that included a DVD with music videos and documentaries.
Making Mirrors won several awards, including Triple J listeners’ #1 album of 2011 (making Gotye the first artist to win the Triple J album poll twice) and Australian Album of the Year at The J Awards 2011. It later won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. The album was a major success in Australia, achieving multi-platinum status, helped by the global popularity of Somebody That I Used to Know. A companion video album, Video Mirrors, was released in 2013. In 2014 Gotye said there would be no more new music under the Gotye name.
