Lucas Mansion
Lucas Mansion, also known as the Hiddenite Center, is a historic house in Hiddenite, Alexander County, North Carolina. It was built around 1900 as a three-story wooden Queen Anne dwelling, noted for its two-story wraparound porch. By 1928 it was enlarged to its present size, and local stories say floors were added by lifting the old ones and building a new floor between them. The house follows a roughly cruciform plan, with variations from floor to floor. It was owned by James Paul Lucas, a South Carolina native and international diamond merchant.
The mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
In 1981, Eileen Sharpe and R.Y. Sharpe bought the mansion and founded the Hiddenite Center. The center has restored the first floor with period furnishings and displays of local gemstones and minerals. The second floor serves as a regional art gallery with a gift shop, and the third floor features a large collection of dolls.
