London Buses route 109
London Buses route 109 is a TfL-backed bus service between Croydon town centre and Brixton station in south London. The route covers about 7 miles (11 km) and uses a peak fleet of around 26 buses. Buses run roughly every 6 to 10 minutes from about 05:30 in the morning until around 01:00 at night, with a night service designated N109.
Key areas on the route include Croydon town centre, Thornton Heath, Norbury, Streatham, and Brixton.
History in brief: Route 109 began on 8 April 1951 as a circular service that connected Purley, West Croydon, Streatham, Elephant & Castle, Victoria Embankment, Westminster, Kennington, Norbury, Croydon, and Purley. It replaced older tram routes. Over the years, Sunday service was reduced (1966), it moved to one-man operation in 1970 (then to double-deck operation in 1974), and in 2001 it switched to a low-floor operation. After re-tendering, Arriva London operated it from 2003 and again from 2010. In 2012 the route moved from Thornton Heath to Brixton garage, and since 2015 it has been operated by Abellio London’s Beddington garage.
