Liutold of Eppenstein (c.1050–12 May 1090) was Duke of Carinthia and Margrave of Verona from 1077 until his death. He came from the powerful Eppenstein family in Upper Styria; his father was Markwart and his mother Liutbirg was a daughter of the Counts of Plain. His grandfather Adalbero had been Duke of Carinthia but was deposed in 1035. The Eppensteins kept influence in Carinthia, making it hard for new emperors to rule there. Liutold became duke in 1077 after the previous duke was removed for supporting Rudolf of Rheinfelden in the Investiture Controversy. Emperor Henry IV appointed him, partly because Liutold had helped Henry by giving safe passage across the Predil Pass on his journey back to Germany. Under Henry, parts of Liutold’s lands were taken and given to the new Patriarchate of Aquileia; the Carinthian March of Styria remained with the Otakars. Liutold accompanied Henry to Rome for his coronation and rebuilt Eppenstein Castle. He married twice but left no children and was succeeded by his younger brother Henry. Liutold is buried at St. Lambrecht's Abbey in Styria.
