Susan Wiggs
Susan Wiggs (born May 17, 1958) is an American author of historical and contemporary romance novels. She started writing as a child and finished her first novel at age eight. After Harvard University, she worked as a math teacher but kept reading romance novels. In 1983 she began writing again, using the working title A Book About Some Bad Adults. Her first published novel came in 1987, Texas Wildflower, a Western historical romance from Zebra Books.
Wiggs writes both historical and contemporary romances, often setting stories in places she has lived or visited. She left teaching in 1992 to write full-time, averaging about two books a year. In 2000 she began writing single-title women’s fiction in addition to historical romances; The You I Never Knew (2001) was her first in that line. Her hardcover debut, Home Before Dark, appeared in 2003. Many of her novels feature connected characters across multiple books, and her works have been translated into many languages.
She has been a frequent finalist for the RITA Award and has won several times: Best Romance of the Year in 1993 for Lord of the Night; Favorite Book of the Year in 2000 for The Charm School; Best Short Historical in 2001 for The Mistress; and Best Historical in 2006 for Lakeside Cottage. She has also earned the Holt Medallion, the Colorado Award of Excellence, and the Peninsula Romance Writers of America Blue Boa Award. Romantic Times has named her a Career Achievement Award winner twice. Wiggs lives on Bainbridge Island, Washington, where her mother maintains her website.
