Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow
The Royal Hospital for Children is a 256-bed hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, for children and young people up to age 16. It’s part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and sits next to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. The hospital opened in June 2015 on the site of the old Southern General Hospital in Govan, replacing the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Yorkhill.
It is affiliated with the University of Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian University, and the University of the West of Scotland. The hospital was designed by Nightingale Associates and built by Brookfield Multiplex. Construction began in 2011, and maternity services moved to the Southern General Hospital in 2010. It was originally going to be called the Royal Hospital for Sick Children but was named the Royal Hospital for Children.
The hospital has a mix of four-bedded and single-bedded rooms. It once had a roof garden for outdoor activities, but the area was closed in 2016 for safety reasons. There is a 47-seat MediCinema for patients and families, funded with about £250,000. While closely linked to the adult Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, it keeps a distinct identity. The hospital has five floors.
