St Hilda's East Community Centre
St Hilda's East Community Centre is a charity in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, east London. It runs from two sites: its main centre in Shoreditch and Sonali Gardens in Shadwell. It helps local people of all backgrounds with many activities, including advice services, youth projects, support for parents and preschool children, work with older people, women’s groups, volunteering placements, and carers’ respite.
It began as a settlement in 1889, started by the Guild of Cheltenham Ladies’ College. After the first building in Victoria Park Square proved unsuitable, it moved in 1898 to Old Nichol Street near the Boundary Estate. In 1945 it bought Bruce Hall across the road. The new building stood at the corner of Old Nichol Street and Club Row. In 1964 the Old Nichol Street building was sold and everything moved to Club Row, which was enlarged in 1968. The buildings were rebuilt in 1994. In 2005 the centre became two sites when the Bengali Elders Day Centre moved to Sonali Gardens in Shadwell.
Today, St Hilda's East provides services for people of all ages and backgrounds in Weavers Ward and across Tower Hamlets. It focuses on Older People and Care, Young People and under-5s, and Women’s Groups and Advice and Training, including legal advice, a community archive, and training opportunities.
