Rangpur District Killing Grounds
Rangpur District in the northwest of Bangladesh has ten known mass grave sites from the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, where the Pakistani army tortured and killed many civilians. Here is a shorter, easy-to-understand guide to the sites and what happened at each.
- Carmichael College area near Damdam Bridge: On 30 April 1971, the Pakistan Army attacked the college and killed several professors; their bodies were buried in a mass grave near Damdam Bridge.
- Balarakhail killing ground (southwest of Rangpur Cantonment): On 12 April 1971, three truckloads of Bengalis were executed.
- Dakhiganj Killing Ground (beside crematorium on Rangpur-Mahiganj Road): On 3 April 1971, 11 people detained in Rangpur city were tortured and executed here; 26 more were brought here and killed in five trucks in the Payaraband Union. One survivor was Dr. Dinesh Chandra Bhowmick.
- Payaraband Union killing grounds: In this mauza, 26 people were brought and executed in five trucks as part of the same events.
- Ramnath Union, Badarganj Upazila: About 400 Bengalis were killed here.
- Nabdiganj village (Rangpur-Kawnia Road): 11 people were executed; a memorial killing ground exists.
- Bircharan Mauza, Tapodhan Union (5 km from Rangpur city): 19 Bengali soldiers were buried here; many names remain unknown.
- Taltala Mosque: After a nearby battle, 17 people were killed inside the mosque in retaliation.
- Teesta River area (villages on both sides of the Teesta): About 200 people were killed on 30 June in retaliation after two soldiers were killed while attempting to rape a local woman.
- Rangpur Town Hall: Built in 1913, the Town Hall was used as a Pakistani military base during the war. Detainees were tortured here, and skeletons were found in a well on the grounds; a memorial stands at the site, and the tale includes accounts of torture and abuse.
