1953 Torud earthquake
On February 12, 1953, a strong earthquake struck near Torud in Semnan Province, Iran, along the northeastern edge of the Great Salt Kavir. The quake had a magnitude of 6.6, occurred at a depth of about 15 km, and its epicenter was near 35.39°N, 54.98°E. It was a reverse-fault earthquake. Shaking reached intensity VIII on the Mercalli scale (Severe). The disaster left about 800–973 people dead and around 140 injured.
