The UNESCO World Heritage Sites are places that are important for humanity’s cultural or natural heritage. Cultural heritage includes monuments, groups of buildings, and archaeological sites. Natural heritage includes natural features, habitats of threatened species, and other important natural sites.
Romania joined the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 16 May 1990, making its sites eligible for inscription. As of 2024, Romania has 11 World Heritage Sites: 9 cultural and 2 natural.
Romania’s first site is the Danube Delta, inscribed in 1990 during the World Heritage Committee’s 15th session in Carthage. Other sites were added in 1993 and 1999, with some later expansions.
In 2021, the Roșia Montană Mining Cultural Landscape was inscribed, but immediately placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to plans to resume mining.
The Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe is a transnational site shared with 18 European countries.
