- 18 teams competed: 16 from the previous season and 2 promoted from the Yugoslav Second League (Proleter Zrenjanin and NK Zagreb)
- The league was played in a double round robin, with each club playing 34 matches
- Points: 2 for a win, 1 for a draw
- Relegated from the previous season were Spartak Subotica and Sutjeska Nikšić

Notes:
- This season marked Hajduk Split’s 7th league title overall.
- In 2023, Vahid Halilhodžić of Velež alleged that Hajduk fixed its last match of the season against OFK Beograd (Hajduk won 2–0) and suggested the fix involved OFK goalkeeper Petar Borota. The claim is an allegation and not proven.
