South Kirkby Wednesday F.C.
South Kirkby Wednesday Football Club was an English team from South Kirkby, West Yorkshire. Its full name was South Kirkby Wednesday Football Club, and they were nicknamed The Wednesday. The club was founded in 1905 as The Faith Street Football Club and dissolved in 1936. They played at the South Kirkby Wednesday Ground in South Kirkby.
By 1905 at the latest, they were known as South Kirkby Wednesday and played in the FA Cup alongside local clubs such as South Kirkby Colliery and Frickley Colliery. The ground, known as the South Kirkby Wednesday Ground, was used for cup finals and inter-league games, and it was probably near Faith Street in South Kirkby.
In 1905 they signalled their intention to join the Hemsworth League, which was run by the West Yorkshire Association.
League history and cups
- 1928/29: They won the Doncaster Red Triangle League Division Two title.
- 1929/30: They withdrew from the Doncaster Red Triangle League.
- 1930/31: They joined the South Kirkby Football League as founding members.
- 1931/32: They briefly rejoined the Doncaster Red Triangle League, then returned to the South Kirkby League within the same season.
- 1933/34: They returned to the Doncaster Red Triangle League.
- 1935/36: They went back to the South Kirkby League and then folded.
Cup competitions they played in included the Doncaster Infirmary Shield and the South Elmsall Challenge Cup for many seasons. In 1933/34 they reached the semi-finals of the Doncaster and District Junior Challenge Cup.
Notable players
- J. Bennett, outside right, who joined Rotherham United from the club in August 1933.
