Irish Baseball Union
The Irish Baseball Union (IBU) was the governing body for British baseball in Ireland. It oversaw the domestic game and the Irish national team, following the formal rules laid out by the English Baseball Association. The IBU was formed in 1933 in Dublin and had a short life, with the Irish team playing only a few international games.
British rounders had been introduced to Ireland in 1924 at the Aonach Tailteann. By April 1933, a new Irish league was active, and plans were underway to send an international team to England. The IBU worked with the English Baseball Association, and English officials attended an exhibition game in Dublin in April 1933.
In June 1933, the IBU selected a team to travel to Liverpool for Ireland’s first international match against England. The Irish side drew players from clubs such as St. Mary’s, St. Oswald’s, British and Irish, Hibernians, Independent, and Connaught. England won the match by an innings and 42 runs.
