University of Miami alumni have made notable contributions across many fields, including academics, business, science, government, entertainment, music, sports, and the arts.
About the university: Founded in 1925, the University of Miami is a private research university in Coral Gables, Florida, just southwest of downtown Miami. It offers a wide range of programs—about 350 majors across 12 schools and colleges, with 138 undergraduate programs, 140 master's programs, and 67 doctoral programs. The campus covers about 240 acres and the endowment was around $1.4 billion in 2021. The university is known for strong research activity and high admissions standards in Florida.
Athletics: The Hurricanes compete in NCAA Division I. The football team has won five national championships since 1983, and the baseball team has won four national championships since 1982.
Alumni in the NFL: Nearly 400 Miami football players have reached the NFL, including 369 draft picks and 67 first-round selections. Eleven Canes have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Jim Otto (1980), Ted Hendricks (1990), Jim Kelly (2002), Michael Irvin (2007), Cortez Kennedy (2012), Warren Sapp (2013), Ray Lewis (2018), Ed Reed (2019), Edgerrin James (2020), Devin Hester (2024), and Andre Johnson (2024).
