Sufi saints, called wali in Arabic (plural awliyā), have played a key role in spreading Islam around the world. In traditional Islamic belief, a saint is someone who has special divine favor and holiness. They are thought to be chosen by God and to have remarkable gifts, such as the ability to perform miracles.
