Madison, New York
Madison is a town in Madison County, New York, and is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The population was 2,766 at the 2020 census. The village of Madison is the largest community inside the town.
History and people: People began settling there around 1794. The town was formed in 1807 from part of the town of Hamilton. Darwin D. Martin, a Larkin Company executive, was born in Bouckville in 1865.
Geography: Madison covers about 41 square miles, mostly land, with a small amount of water. Lake Moraine is in the southern part of the town, and Madison Lake is just northwest of Madison village. The Madison Wind Farm was built in 2000. The northern and eastern borders follow Oneida County. U.S. Route 20 crosses the town, along with State Routes 12B and 26.
Transportation and nearby towns: US-20 runs east-west. Morrisville is about 7 miles to the west, Bridgewater about 15 miles to the east, Hamilton about 5 miles to the south, New Hartford about 18 miles to the northeast, Rome about 26 miles to the north, and Georgetown about 16 miles to the southwest.
Demographics and government: In 2000, about 2,801 people lived in Madison. The town is governed by a Town Supervisor and a Town Council.
