List of South African rugby union teams
Rugby union in South Africa is run by the South African Rugby Union (SARU). The national team is the Springboks. South Africa competes in the Rugby World Cup, The Rugby Championship, Rugby World Cup Sevens, and the IRB Sevens World Series. At club level, the main competitions are the Currie Cup, SA Cup, Varsity Rugby, Gold Cup, the United Rugby Championship, and the Women’s Premier Division.
SARU is made up of 14 provincial unions, each with a senior professional team and amateur clubs:
- Blue Bulls Rugby Union
- Boland Rugby Union
- Border Rugby Football Union
- Eastern Province Rugby Union
- Free State Rugby Union
- Golden Lions Rugby Union
- Griffons Rugby Union
- Griqualand West Rugby Union
- KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union
- Leopards Rugby Union
- Mpumalanga Rugby Union
- South Western Districts Rugby Football Union
- Valke Rugby Union
- Western Province Rugby Football Union
Each union runs a senior team that plays in the Currie Cup and SA Cup, plus youth teams (Under-21 and Under-19) and youth weeks such as Craven Week, Academy Week, and Grant Khomo Week. Amateur clubs play in the union leagues; the top non-university clubs qualify for the Gold Cup.
Universities play in the Varsity Cup (started in 2008) and the Varsity Shield (added in 2011, now part of Varsity Rugby). These university teams also take part in their unions’ championships.
From 2013 to 2015, the Limpopo Blue Bulls competed in the Vodacom Cup as part of the Blue Bulls structure.
