The program began in 1905 and has had 18 head coaches. The Illini have two national championships from the Helms and Premo-Porretta eras. Ralph Jones led the first national champion team and finished with an overall record of 85–34 (.714). Douglas Mills coached the second national champion team, ending his career at 151–66 (.696). Lou Henson spent 21 years as head coach and holds the most wins in Illini history, 423–224. Bill Self has the highest winning percentage ever for an Illini coach at .765 (78–24). The 1942-43 team was named national champion by Premo-Porretta, but the university does not count it as a national title; that team did not participate in the NCAA tournament.
