Naturally Obsessed

Naturally Obsessed is a 2009 American documentary that runs 60 minutes. It follows the training of scientists and the process of discovery in a Columbia University Medical Center lab led by Dr. Lawrence Shapiro. The film shows how X-ray crystallography helps scientists study the AMPK protein, a step toward potential treatments for diabetes and obesity.

The story centers on three graduate students—Robert Townley, Kilpatrick Caroll, and Gabrielle Cubberley—guided by their professor as they work toward earning their PhDs. It highlights the human side of science: persistence, asking the right questions, learning to use technology, mentoring, collaboration, and dealing with competition.

Produced by the nonprofit ParnassusWorks, led by Dr. Richard Rifkind, the documentary aims to help the public understand how science is done and how new scientists contribute to discovery.

Critics praised the film for its honesty and engaging portrayal of scientific life. In 2009, Naturally Obsessed was shown at universities, research institutes, high schools, cultural organizations, government venues, and film festivals across the country.
