Albert Thomas (cricketer)
Albert Edward Thomas, known as Taffy, was a Welsh cricketer born on 7 June 1893 in Ruthin, Wales. He played as a right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler, mainly for Northamptonshire from 1919 to 1933 and also appeared for Wales in 1927.
In his 288 first-class matches, he scored 4,872 runs with a batting average of 13.49, including 11 half-centuries and a top score of 84. Thomas was known for his calm, steady bowling and strong control after World War I, helping strengthen Northamptonshire’s attack. Highlights of his career include 9–30 against Yorkshire in 1920, a notable spell in 1926 when he and Vallance Jupp dismissed Australia for 93, and 8–96 against the 1924 South Africans.
His county career ended in 1933 due to an elbow injury, after which he was granted a testimonial and played in the Birmingham League for Kidderminster, Aston Unity and Old Hill until 1948. He passed away on 21 March 1965 in Kidderminster, England.
