Cross Game is an anime based on Mitsuru Adachi’s manga. It follows high school baseball players Ko Kitamura and Aoba Tsukishima as they try to fulfill Wakaba, Aoba’s sister who died young, and her dream of seeing them reach the national high school championship at Koshien Stadium.

The series was produced by SynergySP, directed by Osamu Sekita, with character designs by Yuuji Kondō and music by Kotaro Nakagawa. It aired on TV Tokyo starting April 5, 2009, in the 10:00–10:30 a.m. slot and later on AT-X and other channels. The 50-episode run finished on March 28, 2010. The first DVD (episodes 1–3) was released on July 24, 2009, with more volumes following each month. In North America, Viz Media began streaming subtitled episodes in May 2010.

Six theme songs were used in the series. The opening is “Summer Rain” by Kobukuro for all episodes. The ending songs are: “Heartfelt Dream” (episodes 1–13) by Ayaka; “Orange Days” (14–26) by Squarehood; “Moeru yō na Koi ja Nai kedo” (27–39) by Tsuru; “Rehearsal” (40–49) by Natsuko Kondo; and “Loving Maiden” (episode 50) by Kondo.

Story overview: Ko Kitamura, born the same day as his neighbor Wakaba Tsukishima, is treated as her boyfriend as a child. Wakaba saves another girl and dies, leaving Ko to cope with the loss. Years later, Aoba, Wakaba’s sister, becomes close to Ko. A memorable moment comes from a sandlot game where Ko, who has never played before, hits the game-winning home run because of the training from the Tsukishima family. Wakaba had given Ko a birthday-present schedule for him to give her as they grew up. The series follows their growth, Wakaba’s memory guiding them, and their pursuit of baseball dreams. In a climactic late-game moment, Seishu leads 2–1 in the bottom of the 12th. Ko pitches at high speed, walks the batter with two outs to load the bases, Mishima hits a full-count pitch, and Ko throws a fast ball to strike out the last batter. After the game, Ko hugs Aoba, she slaps him, then cries into his chest, realizing how much he loves her.
