Hnahthial district
Hnahthial district is one of Mizoram’s eleven districts in India. The district headquarters is Hnahthial town. It was announced on 12 September 2008 as part of three new districts, but it remained non-functional for many years. The district became operational on 3 June 2019 when the office of the Deputy Commissioner was established, and a grand celebration was held on 18 October 2019.
Geography: It is bordered by Serchhip district to the north, Lawngtlai to the south, Lunglei to the west, and Myanmar to the east.
Demographics: As of 2023, the district has about 34,500 residents. Most people belong to Scheduled Tribes, with Christians making up around 99% of the population. The language spoken by almost everyone is Mizo. The sex ratio is close to even, about 1,000 females for every 1,000 males.
Administration: The district has three Legislative Assembly constituencies: South Tuipui, Lunglei North, and Lunglei East. There are about 27 inhabited towns and villages in the district, with thousands of families.
Transport: A helicopter link connects Aizawl with Hnahthial. Road connections run via NH 54, about 172 km from Aizawl, with bus and jeep services available.
