Life of Stefan Nemanja
Life of Stefan Nemanja, also known as the Hagiography of St. Simeon, is a short biography of Serbian Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja (St. Simeon). It was written by his son, Archbishop Sava, in 1208. It is the oldest Serbian hagiography.
A shorter version, the Short Hagiography of St. Simeon Nemanja, appears in the Hilandar Typikon and covers Simeon’s life from his arrival at Hilandar to his death; it was written soon after he died (around 1199–1200). The fuller hagiography was added in the Studenica Typikon (1208). The work follows Byzantine literary rules and was meant to spread the saint’s cult and show his virtues.
The Life focuses on Simeon’s monastic life, showing how he gave up the throne and worldly power for the Kingdom of Heaven. It presents him as an example of renouncing earthly life and living by evangelical teachings and monastic spirituality. The story blends his earlier conquests and achievements with his later monk life, ending with a prayer instead of praise. The language is clear and simple, and Sava, who knew Simeon well, is recognized as the narrator.
