Ulong is a small village on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, about 36 kilometres inland from Coffs Harbour. It sits on the Eastern Dorrigo Plateau at around 520 metres above sea level, with a mild, cool climate and warm, humid summers, plus frosty nights in winter.

The village is part of the City of Coffs Harbour and has the postcode 2450. Population numbers have grown over the years: 131 people in 2006, 233 in 2016, and 215 at the 2021 census. It lies in the state electorate of Coffs Harbour and the federal division of Cowper.

What’s there: Ulong has a community hall, a public school, a cafe with a post office, and an Ex-services Club. The Eastern Dorrigo Community Hall offers camping facilities with a kitchen, BBQs and showers. Timms Park on Ulong Creek has a picnic area, tables and a toilet; the land was donated by LEH Timms.

History and landscape: Ulong is known as the “Village in the Valley” and was once a timber town. Local timbers milled along the old Dorrigo railway line included Dorrigo pine, tallowwood, blackbutt and coachwood. Gold was found in the hills, and Georges Gold Mine operated at times as a tourist site until 2007. The area lies on the road to the Nymboida River and borders two tributaries, the Little Nymbodia and Bobo Rivers.

Events and travel: The area hosts motorsport events, including a two-day Enduro motorcycle championship in 2007 and a World Rally Championship stage in 2011. It sits near many state and national parks with scenic roads.

Notable: Ulong is the home of actor Jack Thompson.

Climate and connections: The higher parts around Ulong have a subtropical highland climate with warm, humid summers and cool winters. This climate is different from nearby Coffs Harbour.
