Let's Get Out of This Country
Let's Get Out of This Country is Camera Obscura’s third studio album, released on June 6, 2006. It’s indie pop with touches of twee and baroque pop, running about 39 minutes. The songs deal with heartbreak, escapism, and boredom.
Recording and background
- Recorded in Sweden with producer Jari Haapalainen; arranged by Björn Yttling.
- Ten songs were chosen from 15 recorded; all written by Tracyanne Campbell.
- After guitarist John Henderson left in 2004, the band wanted a more disciplined process and a sound that moved away from their acoustic roots toward a brighter, more upbeat vibe.
- Influences include Motown, Nancy Sinatra, Patsy Cline, and Tammy Wynette.
What the album is like
- Marked a shift from delicate, acoustic textures to a livelier, more pop/rock course.
- Critics praised it for growing beyond any past comparisons to Belle and Sebastian.
Singles
- Lloyd, I’m Ready to Be Heartbroken (May 2006): includes B-side “Roman Holiday.” Inspired by Lloyd Cole’s “Are You Ready to be Heartbroken?” with strings and organ. Music video set in Tokyo.
- Let’s Get Out of This Country (2006): B-side includes a cover of Sheena Easton’s “Modern Girl.”
- If Looks Could Kill (January 2007): three new tracks, including a cover of The Paris Sisters’ “I Love How You Love Me”; used on Grey’s Anatomy.
- Tears for Affairs (2007): fourth single, featuring Campbell’s soft vocals over a gentle, bossa nova-influenced beat.
Reception and sales
- The album received positive reviews and helped Camera Obscura stand out from Belle and Sebastian.
- It appeared on several year-end and decade-end lists from music publications.
- It sold about 17,100 copies in the UK and 58,000 in North America.
