Rosalind Louise Smyth
Rosalind Louise Smyth CBE (born 28 September 1958) is a British paediatrician from Northern Ireland. She is a professor of child health at University College London (UCL) and led the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health from 2012 to 2022. Since 2022 she has been vice dean for research in UCL's Faculty of Population Health Sciences.
Born in Belfast, she attended Down High School and studied at Clare College, Cambridge (BA 1980; MA 1984) and Westminster Medical School, University of London (MB BS 1983). She trained in paediatrics in London, Cambridge (MD 1993) and Liverpool. Before joining UCL she was a professor of paediatric medicine at the University of Liverpool and executive director of Liverpool Health Partners until 2012. From 2005 to 2012 she directed the NIHR Medicines for Children Research Network, which supports child-focused clinical research in England.
Her leadership roles include being a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and serving on its council. She contributed to national research assessments (2008, 2014) and sat on the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency's Commission on Human Medicines (2009–2013), chairing its Paediatric Medicines Expert Advisory Group (2002–2013). She was awarded a CBE in 2015 for services to the regulation of medicines for children. An advocate of open access, she was a director of the Public Library of Science from 2006 to 2016. She has also been a governor or trustee of the Health Foundation (since 2016), and a trustee of the Medical Research Foundation and the Lister Institute. She chaired the MRC's Clinical Training and Career Development Panel (2017–2022) and leads its Training and Careers Group. In November 2023 she became vice president (clinical) of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Her honours include NIHR senior investigator (2008), honorary fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine (2010), fellow of the European Respiratory Society (2014) and member of Academia Europaea (2018).
