Le Préjugé vaincu
Le Préjugé vaincu is a one‑act comedy in prose by Marivaux. It was first performed on July 6, 1746, in Paris by the King’s Actors. The story follows Angélique, daughter of a marquis, who secretly loves Dorante but won’t admit it because she doesn’t want to marry someone she sees as socially lower. She tells her maid Lisette about the problem, and Lisette agrees they should not marry down either. Dorante tests Angélique by claiming he can arrange a suitable middle‑class partner: rich, educated, but not noble. Angélique refuses. Dorante then says he was talking about himself. The Marquis even offers his youngest daughter to Dorante to test him. Angélique calls Dorante, wanting him to stay and not see her sister; at first he is surprised, then moved. When Angélique finally looks at him and he looks at her, he falls to his knees and she helps him up—pride gives way to love.
