Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher
Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher (born 1958) is a Bangladeshi doctor and politician from Comilla. He belongs to Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and serves as Nayeb-e-Ameer (deputy leader) of the party, a position he has held since 2020. The party’s Ameer is Shafiqur Rahman.
In his early career, Taher led student organizations: he was President of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir from 1986 to 1987, and he served as General Secretary of the International Islamic Federation of Student Organizations from 1992 to 1998, later leading Shibir as Central President for two terms (1985–86 and 1986–87).
Taher was elected Member of Parliament for the Comilla-12 constituency and served from 2001 to 2006. While in Parliament, he was part of the Public Accounts Committee and the Public Undertakings Committee.
He studied at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and works as a physician. He is married to Dr. Habiba Akhter Chowdhury.
Taher has faced legal issues during political turmoil. He was arrested on March 7, 2007, by joint forces on charges including extortion, looting, and grabbing during the military-backed caretaker government, and he was released on ad-interim bail on August 7, 2008. He has been imprisoned several times, including an arrest on January 2, 2013, by the Rapid Action Battalion on charges such as arson, attacks on police, and conspiracy; he was later released on bail.
In 2023, Taher met Matthew Bay, First Political Secretary at the U.S. Embassy, on October 16.
