Laurie Evans (politician)
Laurie Edward Evans (October 14, 1933 – July 19, 2016) was a Manitoba politician and agriculturalist. He served as a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly for Fort Garry from April 26, 1988 to September 11, 1990. He won in 1988, defeating the incumbent Charlie Birt, but lost to Rosemary Vodrey in 1990 as Liberal support declined. He had previously run in Springfield in 1986 and was not elected.
Evans later served as Councillor for Ward 6 in the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne from 2002 to 2015, resigning to move back to Winnipeg.
Born in Unity, Saskatchewan, he earned a BSc from the University of Saskatchewan and MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Manitoba. He worked as an agriculturalist and joined the University of Manitoba faculty in 1958; he also spent 1968–1969 as a technical advisor to CIDA in Kenya. He was married to Mary Ellen Evans and had three daughters—Laura, Norma and Nancy—from a previous marriage, plus two stepsons, Joseph and John.
