Gewobag is a German housing company owned by the state of Berlin. It wants to own about 80,000 apartments by 2030 to make renting more affordable. The name Gewobag comes from its old long form: Gemeinnützige Wohnungsbau-AG Groß Berlin (Public Housing Construction Corporation of Greater Berlin). Founded on May 14, 1919, it is based in Berlin. In September 2019, it bought 6,000 apartments from ADO Properties, mostly in Spandau and Reinickendorf, for about 920 million euros. This was the largest apartment purchase in Berlin’s history.
