Susan Chapman
Susan Claire Chapman, also known as Sue Chapman-Popa or Sue Chapman, was born on 17 September 1962. She is a former Australian rower who represented her country at the World Rowing Championships and the Olympic Games, earning Australia’s first Olympic medal in women’s rowing with bronze in the coxed four at Los Angeles 1984. In 1986 she won gold with the Australian women's eight at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and also won silver in the coxed four.
Chapman started rowing at Lauriston Girls’ School and rowed for the Melbourne University Ladies Boat Club. She competed for Victoria in the Interstate Regatta, winning the ULVA Trophy several times. In 2007 she and her husband, Ion Popa, started Rowing School Victoria. Ion Popa is a former Romanian rower who later became an Australian Olympian and world champion. Their daughter Rosemary Popa is a national champion rower who has competed for both the United States and Australia, and they have a son named Edward.
