Larry J. Hornbeck (born September 17, 1943) is an American physicist who invented the digital micromirror device (DMD). He helped develop DLP cinema technology while working at Texas Instruments. He earned a Ph.D. in physics from Case Western Reserve University in 1974. He joined Texas Instruments in 1973 and began working on optical MEMS in 1977, leading to the first DMD being built and demonstrated in 1987. In 2007, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for the invention and development of the DMD and its use in projection displays.
