Palkino, Palkinsky District, Pskov Oblast
Palkino is an urban-type settlement and the administrative center of Palkinsky District in Pskov Oblast, Russia. It is about 36 kilometers southwest of Pskov. Municipally, Palkino is the Palkino Urban Settlement, the only urban area in the district.
Population: 2,924 (2010 census); about 2,870 (2021 estimate). Earlier figures: 3,201 (2002); 3,406 (1989).
History in brief: In the 19th century, Palkino was a village in Pskovsky Uyezd, Pskov Governorate. On August 1, 1927, the uyezds were abolished and Palkinsky District was created with its center in Palkino. It became part of Pskov Okrug of Leningrad Oblast, then directly under the oblast after 1930. On September 20, 1931, the district was abolished and merged into Ostrovsky District. It was re-established on February 15, 1935. From March 22, 1935 to September 19, 1940, it was part of Pskov Okrug of Leningrad Oblast. The area was occupied by German forces from August 1941 to July 1944. On August 23, 1944, it became part of the newly formed Pskov Oblast. On October 15, 1985, Palkino was granted urban-type settlement status.
Transport: Palkino is connected by road to Pskov and Ostrov, and from Ostrov to the M20 highway (St. Petersburg–Vitebsk via Pskov). There are also local roads.
